Anmerkung | This article examines a number of features of A. E. Presniakov's works. The Russian historian (1870-1929) is known as a representative of the Petersburg historiographical school which advocated rigorous study of sources and facts. However, one can observe that his work of the 1920s was influenced by Marxism in an unconventional manner. We conclude from this that Presniakov tended not to consider Russian autocracy as an equivalent of Western feudalism and absolutism, but as a variant of Eastern despotism. He regarded Marxism as a reflection on history in socio-economic terms and was attracted to its elements of historical metaphysics. Presniakov never adhered to "Marxist orthodoxy" and his vision of the Russian historical process remained very far removed from Soviet canons. |
