AbstractOnce considered the eighth wonder of the modern world, Russia's 300-year-old Amber Room exists now as a symbol, a casualty of war and a monument to tragic greed. The extraordinary chamber, constructed of intricately carved panels of the prized golden resin, was a gift from Germany to Russia in the 1700s, only to be dismantled and stolen by the Nazis during World War II. It has never been recovered and is feared permanently lost.
