AbstractHalf a century after being dismantled and carted away by retreating Nazi troops, the magnificent, now nearly mythic Amber Room that once glowed within the Russian royal family's palace near St. Petersburg is slowly being rebuilt. Floor-to-ceiling panels of Baltic amber are being cut, carved, etched and gilded by artisans working from fading photographs and fragments of the original to recreate the 18th-century masterwork.
