Abstract | As the noose began to cinch down on Germany and the Nazis at the end of World War II, Hitler and his Third Reich thieves were desperately hiding one of the world's greatest art collections, storing it in clandestine underground bunkers. The center piece of those thefts was the Amber Chamber, a dazzling collection of 22 amber panels trimmed in gold. The panels once glimmered in the clear light streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows in Catherine the Great's castle near St. Petersburg. |
