| Abstract | Irony makes a prisoner’s written communication easier in totalitarian regimes. Irony allows indirect expression of aggression against the political system and creates room for provocation. The intensity of irony can vary, and even in the case of an intimate relationship the recognition of the ironical intention is not necessarily guaranteed. Through the ironic use of propaganda speech one can beat the system at its own game. Julij Daniel’s enormous literary knowledge allowed him to make ironical allusions to a degree which undoubtedly goes far beyond the abilities of censorship. |
