The European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (EBSEES) collects books, journal articles, reviews and dissertations from Eastern Europe (former countries of Eastern Bloc) which were published in Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland from 1991 to 2007. The segment "Literature" and "Culture" of the European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies contains 18.000 bibliographic entries (from the total asset of 85.000). | Note | This article presents Nicholas I in an unusual light. It shows that the tsar's position towards France did not result so much from the despotic voluntarism relayed by his posthumous legend as from an aspiration to scrupulously respect established laws and regulations. An analysis of unpublished diplomatic dispatches in which two French ambassadors to St. Petersburg, count de La Ferronnays and duke de Mortemart relate their conversations with the tsar, allows us to show that Nicholas I was very well informed about France's internal situation under Charles X and that he pronounced himself against the ultra (royalist, conservative and catholic) currents of French society because they threatened to disrupt the French political balance.
