Note | "Ecphrastic in genre, ‘Breugel’s Two Monkeys' heightens and bridges the disparity between language, abstract and arbitrary, and the world. Chained to a window overlooking a bright vision of flight and buoyancy, of perfect ease in their medium, the monkeys reinforce Szymborska's ironic contrast between the reality and the delusive utopianism of Stalinist power. However, they resist allegorical readings: reduced to signs of human difference and superiority, they expose these as figments of language, figures of speech. Using their chains as a sign, they offer dialogue as a way of defusing the poet's anxiety about the mimetic disadvantages of language." |
