Note | "Extracts from the previously unpublished letters and diaries of Count Maximilian Joseph von Lerchenfeld are used to illuminate an otherwise sparsely documented period of Tiutchev's life and his first years as a diplomat in Munich (1822–26). Details emerge of his frustrated love affair with Maximilian's young half-sister Amalie, nearly involving a duel, and her eventual marriage to Tiutchev's colleague, Alexander von Krüdener (for which new archive material is also adduced). The poems inspired by Amalie (‘Slezy’, ‘K N.’, and ‘Ia pomniu vremia zolotoe…’) are placed against the biographical background, and on the basis of an entry in Maximilian's diaries and other supporting evidence the ruined castle in the latter poem is identified as that at Donaustauf near Regensburg." |
