Note | "In June 1946 Victor Klemperer returned with his wife Eva from their refugee existence in south-west Germany to their home town of Dresden in the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany. Just over five months later, in late November 1946, he decided to join the Communist Party, not with any great sense of enthusiasm, but rather from the reluctant conviction that it represented the lesser of two evils when compared with what he saw to be the renascent Fascism of the Western-occupied zones of his country. His diary entry for 20 November 1946 clearly records the agonised considerations underpinning his decision. In the light of subsequent developments, they are worth quoting at length here" |
