Note"Küpper here argues that, although commentary on Bakhtin's study of Dostoevsky (in both its 1929 and 1963 versions) has tended to concentrate on the role assigned within it to the verbal features of Dostoevsky's art, visual metaphory plays a more significant role in Bakhtin's analysis of the novelist's work than has traditionally been acknowledged. Tracing the use of, in particular, the terms obraz (image) and videnie (vision), and their connections with aspects of Russian religious thought, Küpper contends that for Bakhtin there is a strongly iconic element in Dostoevsky's work, and thus that Bakhtin's argument is driven by a strong theological undercurrent."
