Note | "This study examines how Cold War images of the discipline of international relations have been represented by contemporary thinkers wishing to advance different theoretical approaches in the post-Cold War era. In particular, it focuses on the increasing use of the term 'silences' in writings in the field. The paper argues that the debate over exclusion in international relations is poorly explicated and engenders false discontinuities in the intellectual history of the discipline that enables those who now articulate a concern for the silenced to cast a light hand over their own role in the Cold War. In effect, far from liberating marginalized voices, the way that the discussion on the 'silences' has been conducted often closes down avenues of debate, militating in particular against the study of Cold War history by performing acts of exclusion on others." |
