Note"In this essay Hitchcock attempts to link a key Bakhtinian concept, architectonics, to materialist analyses of culture. He does this in two ways: first, by clarifying certain materialist implications within Bakhtin's thinking; and second, by using Foucaulf s notion of genealogy as a bridging concept. While the invocation of the ‘social’ in Bakhtin studies marks this approach as a discrepant architectonics, it remains a vital endeavour in ‘answering’ Bakhtin as a social critic."
