Note"Tihanov here examines the evolution of Bakhtin's idea of the human body as a cultural value between his early essay ‘Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity’ and Rabelais and his World, a book on which Bakhtin worked for almost 30 years, from the mid-1950s to 1965. While bound together by the centrality of the human body as a philosophical problem, Bakhtin's two significant works are shown to stand for two strongly divergent positions: the earlier one searches for the limits of privacy and identity in the exchange with others; the later one cherishes the abolition of these limits, the removal of every boundary separating one human body from the other. In tracing Bakhtin's growing fascination with the cultural value of the primitive, the organic and the natural, Tihanov also analyses Bakhtin's idea of history and his contradictory belief in the inalterability of the human condition."
