Note"In a negotiated exchange of men for war material, the Tsarist government sent two brigades to fight on the Western Front on the side of their French ally in 1916. After the revolution occurred in Russia, the two brigades mutinied and were transferred to a remote corner of France, where the mutiny was suppressed. After stability was achieved, a number of loyal Russian soldiers asked to return to the front as the Russian Legion. The motive of these men was solely to honour their nation’s commitment to France, and they fought well to the end of the war, suffering heavy casualties."
