Note"This article examines a number of works on the nature of Soviet Marxism and the relationship between ideology and politics in the Soviet Union published in the last decade. They are placed in the context of debates on Soviet ideology since the 1950s, and it is shown how they reflect continuing disagreements between 'totalitarianist', 'conflictualist' and 'structuralist' interpretations. However, it is argued that now that the subject is no longer so politicized a new literature is emerging that lays the foundations for a more convincing account of the influence of Marxism on Soviet practice."
