Abstract | The KGB combed World War II ruins for it. The East German secret police trained art historians to sift through clues to its whereabouts and dogs to sniff for it. Boris Yeltsin once claimed to have found out where it was - only to join the hapless ranks of countless treasure hunters who have wasted time, money, and reputation in a fruitless search over the past 50 years. But now German police have come up with compelling clues that could spell an end to the mystery. Their common obsession is the Amber Room, the most glamorous loose end of World War II. |
