Note"In 1940 Stalin preferred to end the Winter War without having conquered all of Finland rather than risking landing up in a war with Great Britain and France. Yet he wanted to achieve a propitious frontier for a future attack before signing the peace treaty. This became possible by means of a daring over-ice attack that checkmated the Finnish defense forces. Thereby the Red Army had a definite breakthrough within reach. A detailed analysis of the ice conditions and of Finland's remaining war equipment indictes that the leader of the Soviet attack cannot take much of the credit for the successful operation. The Commander of the Finnish Naval Forces simply failed to use his available means to stop the attack."
